If you believe that cybersecurity is your boss’s problem, please read about this case currently going through the Court of Session here in Scotland. The matter came to court in February 2019 and we’ve discussed it at our Excellimore Insights events this year.
A company, Peebles Media Group of Glasgow, are suing their employee Mrs Patricia Reilly for having paid around £200,000 from the company bank account to fraudsters. The allegations are that Mrs Reilly did not take sufficient care to make sure the payee was genuine and she ignored advice from their online banking service to take such care.
This is a sorry state of affairs to have come to court. Regardless of the outcome it will have cost both parties an enormous amount of time, worry, and money and as far as I can find the case has not yet been decided.
The case is being heard in the Court of Session in Edinburgh. Even people who win cases like this can end up selling their house to pay for the solicitors and advocates involved.
So, even as an employee, you can’t shrug your shoulders and say “it’s my boss’s problem”. You absolutely must take great care when doing anything online involving cash or confidential personal information. If you don’t, it could cost you everything.
